about

The roots of this one go way back to 1997 or 1998 and my first band (Sleepyhouse). I had written a song called Elise which was a kinda earnest sounding Counting Crows-type number. It hung around for a while and followed me for a few years to other projects, but it never quite clicked.

I always did like the melody and I had found the old 4 track of it and a version recorded at Carlton Studios in Glasgow w/Danny Mitchell (on the master for an unreleased EP called Winter Starts Here) and I started playing it while singing the words to a song that I had written for The Great Destroyer... the themes and structure were similar, so maybe that's why it fitted.

Anyhoo, it was one of the first tunes Craig and I recorded for this thing and we both liked it. It had a very 90's vibe and it was one of the first that we started furnishing w/additional instruments. I shared it w/my oldest pal Kev + he recognised it from our early days in a band (we had formed Sleepyhouse and then Glitterball Vegas together and Elise was a track we worked on in both settings). He dug it and offered to lay down a bass track and that felt right. The track coming full circle. Now we get to say it worked out. His bass is just perfect, too. It's just what it needed.

I'm also pretty excited that Joe provided a vocal here. I've been a huge fan of his band (The 1984 Draft) since hearing Makes Good Choices and we kinda connected about that. I could hear his vocal when I listened to the full band arrangement... Joe was in the middle of creating his own album, but I reached out to see if we could make something happen...

lyrics

i’ve got a room full of books that aint worth reading
i’m gonna list them on eBay if it stops you leaving
i’m stockpiling papers to keep me warm
cause this house is colder when you’re gone

i’m gonna sit here, dear.
stare at the stars
dream about those days of falling in and in and out of bars
and my head hurts like I’ve been in a crash
… and all the broken glass around me?
maybe I have

ah shit dear, I never meant what i said
i stumble for words at the best of time
that time we held on when it looked like the end?
it’s in a frame at the end of the hall.

i’m gonna sit here, dear.
stare at the stars
dream about those days of falling in and in and out of bars
my head hurts like I’ve been in a crash
… and all the broken glass around me?
maybe I have
