I find it hard to breathe inside this wooden kimono All my friends have gathered ‘round to say their farewells Someone drill a hole, so I can see those flies circle like vultures And if I can’t shake this, then won’t someone see that my grave is kept clean? Thought I saw Jesus Thought I saw my kin There’s a dusk and I can’t see this box I'm in It’s dark as hell and hot as hell down in the hole Raise me! Like Elijah raised the son of the widow of Zarephath With my shallow breath I’ll swear this is not the bed I made I can see the dust surround me and I can hear the trumpets I can hear the singing of the choir Thought I saw Jesus Thought I saw my kin They’re comin’ to raise me from this box that I am in It’s dark as hell and hot as hell down in the hole I find it hard to breathe inside this wooden kimono I feel the itchin’ of those insects as the crawl o’er my skin When I woke, I did not expect to be laid here I can barely breathe, so I'll lay with my mistakes Thought I saw Jesus Thought I saw my kin And now I can hear the singing of the choir It’s dark as hell And hot as hell Down in the Hole

When the sun is at your back, may the road rise up to meet you May all who meet you there never let you down When you’re alone, may their arms reach out to greet you And you’ll never have troubles on your way Well you said you were alone and there was no-one there to greet you You stepped on that train and you were never looking back You asked your family if they would be there to meet you If they would welcome you back and take you home If I was a betting man I would put all my money on making mistakes If I was a lucky man I would put things together just to break them again If I was a betting man I would put all my money on making mistakes If I was a lucky man I would put things together just to break them again If I was a betting man I would put all my money on making mistakes If I was a lucky man I would put things together just to break them again If I was a betting man I would put all my money on making mistakes If I was a lucky man I’d do my best to get away from this mess

I told you I’d build you a house Cause, that’s what love is about One piece at a time I carried the lumber I ploughed the field and prayed it might rain We counted chickens before they hatched I lost my nerves to the wolves outside I put up fences and we closed the doors Played loud music to keep out the noise "Mending fences is all I seem to do", I said "This house is ruined it’s coming undone" Spend all my time trying to pick up the pieces While mending the fences to keep out the wolves The journey hasn't been easy But we’re here albeit a little weary We found our home and we’ll throw everything we got Into the space and we pray it might rain Pray it might rain, it might rain … *in moderation

You hold the line Waiting for something and closing your eyes I’m feeling almost gone Pushing your ear to the ground Fill your pockets with your fidgeting hands Until you hear the words you want You shoulda known better, shoulda made another plan Shoulda thrown it further and you coulda passed them You coulda been better, coulda done gone made a stand Somewhat lost, yet always tethered to home I carried you over the line dirt in your hair looked a little like dust And you whispered "how soon?" I built these walls and you built the fence You filled your pockets with your fidgeting hands But this ol’ place weathered the storm You shoulda known better, shoulda made another plan Shoulda thrown it further and you coulda passed them You coulda been better, coulda done gone made a stand Somewhat lost, yet always tethered to home It’s never enough When what surrounds us is worn Rust settles in and we’re forced to go it alone We hold the line ... ... Patiently hanging on Closing our eyes so we miss the storm Filling our pockets with dust so we remember home

I’m just a bag of bones Sitting here all alone I’ve drank so much I can hardly see Have I met you before? Will I meet you again? Leave your number behind the bar You don’t like me! Well I don’t like me, too! You say you’re sick of love? Well, I got the lovesick blues Oh, I’m sick of TV Oh, are you sick of me? I could drink till I go blind I’m sick of falling down I’m gonna get up I’m gonna fight a giant robot! You don’t like me! Well I don’t like me, too! You say you’re sick of love? Well, I got the lovesick blues

Trains 01:10
Riding trains Riding trains Down South Ride that train You Never Told Me Where You been? Riding trains? Riding trains ... Riding trains Ride that train

I’m not gonna worry about what's round the corner and I aint one for a worried mind I’m not gonna tire of those ol' crows on the wire 'Cause I aint one for telling you lies I’m not gonna drift from story to story Missing out parts as I go I’m not gonna say I will if I’m not gonna, You can ask anybody I know So let it rain, let it snow Let the whole damn thing crash down Let it rain, let it snow and let the rain come back around I’m not gonna worry about what might happen, Cause I aint got a worried mind I’m not gonna tire of those words cross the wire That say I’m the running kind I don’t pay attention to what they’re saying Cause those telephone lines tell lies I aint got no time for those types o’ troubles I left that ol’ hat behind So let it rain, let it snow Let the whole damn thing crash down Let it rain, let it snow and let the rain come back around

Home 04:40
There’s a wind coming in from the west The woman by my side says she knows best It’s taken all I had Just to find a place where I could stop and take it in There’s a cold, cold wind from the west There's a woman by my side that I love best It’s taken all I had Just to find a place where I could stop and have a rest Take all your things and run Pack up all your belongings and the people you love Forget where you go … forget all you know Find a lovely place with a fine view My woman, she packed all of her things She said start the car and get the hell outta here We Got a place on the map Where everyone’s a friend We’re on the highway, dear Oh I keep all I have in a brown paper bag I keep all my love in a brown paper bag When I look out to the west To the place I love best To the people I’ve known all my life
9.
Losin’ it hard when you aint got a lucky hand I can see the road ahead when the rain is lashin’ down You coulda said, you shoulda said Liftin’ rocks is hard on these blistered hands Whether it breaks me time will tell You coulda said, you shoulda said Lovin’ it easy for this big bruised heart I can see where we’re headed, cause I’ve been there before You coulda said, you shoulda said

I'm Not Lost 06:56
I’m not lost – I sigh at your question But I can’t bear to watch as my plane falls I breathe in gas – it helps the time pass And I feel myself begin to slip away Washed over in a frozen lake Far away – I close my eyes I’m not lost – I smile at the picture Of the sad ol’ happy clown I’m dreaming fast – seeing your sweet face Feel my mind shake in this frozen lake Washed over in a frozen lake Far away – I close my eyes I’m not lost – this house is familiar Though the scenery is not the same I step outside – look at the bright sky Feel myself begin to slip away Washed over in a frozen lake Far away – I close my eyes

about

Pray For Rain is Jim Dead's fourth release and the first to be credited to Jim Dead & The Doubters. It's a more electric affair, with shades of off the map influences like Roky Erickson and the Aliens, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Calexico, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, and The Doors.

It's a journey. The soundtrack to a road movie across the sun-scorched and beaten highways and byways of Deadsville. Where the folks are a bit grizzled. Awaiting salvation. Waiting and hoping for a change. They pray for better days. They pray for rain.
